Saurashtra University has taken a major step toward promoting smart and technology-driven agriculture by helping develop a mobile application designed specifically to provide farmers with important information about their farms, crops, soil and weather conditions.

Developed with the support of Advik Eduventure Private Company, the application aims to make modern farming technology accessible to farmers directly through their mobile phones. One of its key features is its compatibility with different types of mobile devices, allowing farmers to access agricultural information without needing sophisticated equipment.

The application brings together several useful farming tools in one platform. It provides soil-related information, weather updates, crop monitoring and guidance that can help farmers make better decisions at different stages of cultivation.

According to the team behind the project, satellite-based information can provide farmers with weather updates for up to 15 days in advance. The system is also designed to help identify possible pest attacks and crop diseases several days before they become a major problem. With timely information and better farm management, there is hope that farmers could improve crop productivity by around 20 percent.

What Makes the Saurashtra University Farming App Special?

One of the important features of the application is soil analysis. Farmers can use the platform to understand the quality and condition of their soil, which can play an important role in deciding which crop should be cultivated and how the field should be managed.

The application also provides information about soil moisture, helping farmers understand the amount of moisture available in the soil. This information can be useful for deciding when irrigation is required and preventing unnecessary use of water.

Another major feature is crop planning. The application is designed to help farmers plan their cultivation cycle, starting from sowing and continuing through the expected harvesting period. This can give farmers a clearer picture of the different stages of crop development and the activities that need to be carried out at the appropriate time.

Farmers can also keep track of their crops during the growing season. Information about crop conditions can help them understand whether different sections of their field are developing properly or whether a particular area requires attention.

Farmers Can Get Solutions by Taking a Crop Photo

The application also aims to make it easier for farmers to identify crop-related problems. If a farmer notices symptoms of a disease or pest attack, a photograph of the affected crop can be used to seek information and guidance.

This feature could be particularly useful in situations where farmers are unable to immediately identify the problem affecting their crops. Early identification can allow farmers to take appropriate action before the problem spreads across a larger part of the field.

Parul Tank, a technocrat associated with the team that developed the application, described it as the team’s first startup and its first product. According to the team, the product has been developed with a clear focus on addressing practical problems faced by farmers.

Focus on Satellite-Based Farming Technology

The project has been built around the concept of satellite-based farming. The team has reportedly been working on the project for the past three years, with the objective of using technology to address some of the basic challenges associated with modern agriculture.

There are several decisions that farmers have to make throughout the cultivation cycle. These include understanding soil quality, identifying crop diseases, recognizing pest attacks and deciding the right time to take action.

A delay in making the right decision can sometimes result in crop damage and financial losses. The application is intended to provide farmers with relevant information so that they can make decisions at the right stage of cultivation.

The initiative also addresses a broader concern about the younger generation and its changing connection with agriculture. The team believes that a lack of awareness about modern farming practices and the technical aspects of crop production can contribute to difficulties in agriculture.

Smart Water Management for Better Farming

Water management is another important area addressed through the project. Farming expenses can increase significantly when crops require excessive irrigation or when water is not used efficiently.

The application includes an online scheduling system that gives priority to water management and aims to reduce unnecessary water consumption. By providing farmers with information that can help them plan irrigation, the project seeks to encourage more efficient use of available water resources.

Better water management can be particularly important in regions where farmers face challenges related to water availability. Reducing wastage while maintaining appropriate moisture levels could help farmers manage both resources and cultivation costs more effectively.

Saurashtra University Promotes Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The development of the application is also connected with the efforts of the Saurashtra University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council, which works to encourage innovation, research and entrepreneurship.

With support from Saurashtra University, the application has been developed as an initiative aimed at bringing modern technology closer to the agricultural community.

The project also received financial backing under the Gujarat government’s Startup and Innovation Policy-2020. At the 22nd State Level Empowered Committee meeting held under the policy, seed support funding of ₹25 lakh was approved.

The financial assistance has been used to support the development of technology aimed at making agriculture smarter and more efficient.

A Step Towards Technology-Based Agriculture in Saurashtra

For farmers, access to timely and accurate information can make a significant difference. The broader objective is to connect farmers with modern technology and encourage a more informed approach to cultivation. Instead of relying only on traditional methods or reacting after a crop problem becomes serious, farmers could use technology to monitor conditions and take decisions earlier.

The initiative by Saurashtra University and its partners represents an effort to combine agriculture, satellite technology and digital tools in a way that can be useful at the farm level. If adopted widely, such technology could help farmers improve resource management, reduce avoidable losses and work toward better crop productivity.

The project ultimately aims to promote smart and sustainable farming, while making advanced agricultural information more accessible to farmers through the device they already use every day—their mobile phone.
