BAPS Paris Mandir: A historic chapter in the story of Sanatan Dharma in France is taking shape in Bussy-Saint-Georges, a suburb of Paris, where thousands of devotees have gathered for the inauguration of the country’s first traditional Hindu temple. The grand celebrations, being held from September 2 to 14, 2026, will bring together devotees, visitors, artists and invited guests from across the world.

The newly built temple stands within a sprawling 10-acre complex known as Swaminarayan Nagar. The main inauguration and consecration ceremony is scheduled for September 6 in the presence of Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual head of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha.

The 13-day Festival of Culture has been planned as more than a temple celebration. It will showcase Indian heritage, Hindu traditions, cultural performances and universal values, while also highlighting the long-standing friendship between India and France.

Mahant Swami Maharaj Arrives in Paris

The arrival of Mahant Swami Maharaj in the Paris region created a deeply devotional atmosphere among BAPS devotees and volunteers. Hundreds of people from different parts of Europe and other countries gathered along the route to welcome their spiritual guru.

Traditional dances and cultural performances were organised as part of the welcome. After reaching Bussy-Saint-Georges, Mahant Swami Maharaj had his first darshan of the newly constructed temple and visited the large Swaminarayan Nagar complex prepared especially for the festival.

He also reviewed the arrangements for the upcoming celebrations. The temple and its surrounding facilities are the result of years of planning, dedication and the sustained efforts of thousands of devotees and volunteers.

One of the notable aspects of the project is the construction method used for the temple. Stones were carved in India before being transported to France, where they were carefully assembled to create the traditional Hindu architectural structure.

Grand Temple Inauguration on September 6

The central event of the festival will take place on September 6, 2026, when France’s first traditional Hindu temple will be formally inaugurated and the sacred deities will be consecrated in the presence of Mahant Swami Maharaj.

The occasion is expected to draw devotees and visitors from different parts of the world. More than 10,000 invited guests and visitors are expected to participate in events taking place between September 2 and 14.

The BAPS Paris Mandir is being presented as an important cultural and spiritual landmark for the Hindu community in France and for people interested in India’s traditional heritage.

11 Boats to Sail on the Seine

Another major attraction of the festival will be a special Jal Yatra on the Seine River on September 3.

A fleet of 11 decorated boats will travel along the famous Paris waterway. The event will combine elements of Hindu tradition with a message celebrating the enduring friendship between India and France.

With one of the world’s most recognisable cities as its setting, the river procession is expected to offer a distinctive representation of Indian culture in the heart of Paris.

Grand Nagar Yatra From the Eiffel Tower

On September 5, a spectacular Nagar Yatra, or cultural procession, will begin near the Eiffel Tower.

More than 5,000 devotees and performers are expected to participate in the procession, dressed in traditional Indian attire. The participants will present Indian music, folk dances and cultural performances as the procession moves through prominent roads in central Paris.

The procession will feature 14 elaborately decorated chariots, each designed to showcase different aspects of Indian culture and values. The broader message will include the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the ancient Indian idea that the world is one family.

The presence of the procession near the Eiffel Tower is expected to provide a striking meeting point between India’s cultural traditions and one of France’s most famous landmarks.

A Journey That Began Decades Ago

The opening of the BAPS Paris Mandir represents the culmination of a journey that stretches back more than five decades.

On July 7, 1970, Yogiji Maharaj visited Orly Airport and encouraged Pramukh Swami Maharaj and Mahant Swami Maharaj to contribute to the spiritual and cultural presence of the Swaminarayan tradition in France.

Years later, on August 2, 1995, ahead of the inauguration of the Neasden Temple in London, Pramukh Swami Maharaj expressed the vision of establishing a grand traditional Hindu temple in Paris.

The project moved closer to reality decades later. On October 19, 2021, the foundation-related religious ceremony was conducted in the presence of Pujya Ishwarcharandas Swami. A subsequent foundation-stone ceremony in September 2022 was attended by diplomats and Mayor Yann Dubosc, marking another significant step in the development of the project.

Temple Project Reaches Completion

Construction progressed through the following years, with the temple project reaching completion between June 2024 and 2026. The work and its cultural significance also received appreciation in international circles, including recognition associated with Britain’s King Charles III and a platform connected with the United Nations.

For BAPS devotees, however, the completion of the temple represents much more than the finishing of a major construction project. It marks the fulfilment of a vision that was nurtured for generations through faith, service and collective effort.

With its traditional architecture, cultural programmes and large-scale celebrations, the BAPS Paris Mandir festival is set to place India’s spiritual and cultural heritage prominently in Paris. The events from September 2 to 14 are expected to bring together thousands of people and create a significant moment for the Hindu community in France.

The September 6 inauguration will therefore be the defining moment of the celebrations, opening a new chapter for traditional Hindu culture and Sanatan Dharma in France while reflecting the message of harmony, cultural exchange and Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
