Vantara Jamnagar Airlifts 53-Year-Old Elephant Joymoti from Assam Floods for Emergency Treatment
Vantara Jamnagar: A 53-year-old female elephant named Joymoti, who suffered serious injuries after being caught in the devastating floods that hit Assam and Nagaland in July, has been airlifted to Vantara Jamnagar for specialised veterinary treatment.
The elephant was rescued after being swept into the floodwaters and sustaining multiple injuries. Her condition required urgent medical attention, prompting an emergency decision to transport her by air rather than subject her to the physical strain and lengthy journey involved in road transportation.
Joymoti Suffered Multiple Serious Injuries
Joymoti sustained significant injuries to several parts of her body during the flood incident. According to the information available, she suffered wounds around her forehead, ears, thigh and abdomen.
Her medical condition was further complicated by existing health problems. She has reportedly lost vision in her right eye and also suffers from a limp linked to a fracture she sustained in the past during logging activities.
The combination of her flood-related injuries and previous health complications left the elderly elephant in a serious condition. Given the circumstances, getting her to a specialised veterinary facility as quickly as possible became a priority.
Special Airlift Arranged for Emergency Veterinary Care
In a significant wildlife rescue operation, arrangements were made to airlift Joymoti directly to Vantara Jamnagar. The decision was taken to reduce both the travel time and the physical stress associated with transporting a seriously injured elephant over a long distance by road.
The operation is particularly notable because of the challenges involved in moving a large animal in critical condition. Instead of exposing Joymoti to a prolonged ground journey, the emergency air transfer was planned to get her to specialised veterinary care as quickly as possible.
The objective is to stabilise her condition and provide the medical treatment required for her injuries and other ongoing health concerns.
Vantara Team to Conduct Detailed Medical Assessment
After reaching Vantara, Joymoti will undergo a comprehensive medical examination by a team of veterinary specialists. Doctors will assess the injuries she sustained during the floods, examine the condition of her right eye and evaluate her overall health.
Her treatment plan will also focus on nutrition and supportive care, which are particularly important for an elderly elephant recovering from serious physical trauma.

Assam May Get Dedicated Wildlife Veterinary Centres
Joymoti’s case has also highlighted a wider issue concerning access to specialised veterinary facilities in regions that frequently experience floods and human-wildlife conflict.
Emergency treatment can become particularly difficult when injured wild animals are located in remote areas and specialised medical facilities are situated far away. Transporting large animals over long distances can itself create additional physical stress, especially when they are already seriously injured.
To address this challenge, Vantara has proposed establishing three wildlife veterinary care centres in Assam. The proposal includes a dedicated facility specifically for elephants.
The proposed centres would be operated independently by the Assam Forest Department. The aim would be to strengthen veterinary capabilities closer to areas where wildlife emergencies occur.
Local Veterinary Infrastructure Could Help Future Rescues
The proposed veterinary centres could provide an important local resource during floods, wildlife emergencies and cases involving human-animal conflict. Having specialised treatment facilities closer to affected areas could allow injured animals to receive emergency care much sooner.
It could also reduce the need to transport critically injured wildlife over very long distances. For elephants and other large animals, this can be particularly important because transportation requires extensive planning and can place considerable physical demands on the animal.
Joymoti’s rescue has therefore become more than an individual medical case. It has drawn attention to the importance of strengthening wildlife healthcare infrastructure in regions vulnerable to natural disasters.
