Gujarat Rains Update continued to batter large parts of the state on Tuesday, triggering severe flooding in Surat after relentless downpours dumped nearly 18 inches of rain within just 36 hours. The unprecedented rainfall overwhelmed roads, residential areas, commercial complexes, and public transport, leaving thousands of residents affected and forcing authorities to launch large-scale rescue and relief operations.
The heavy rainfall has transformed several parts of Surat into flood-hit zones, with streets turning into waterways, homes and shops inundated, and vehicles submerged in parking basements. As the weather department warned of more intense rainfall, officials declared a holiday for all schools and colleges across Surat city and district on Wednesday to ensure public safety.
Surat Faces One of Its Worst Urban Flooding Events
Continuous rainfall that began on Monday showed no signs of easing through Tuesday, creating widespread disruption across Gujarat’s second-largest city. Areas that normally witness heavy traffic were submerged under several feet of water, making conventional transportation impossible in many localities.
Emergency teams were forced to use boats to rescue stranded residents from low-lying neighborhoods where floodwaters entered homes within hours. In several residential societies, water levels rose rapidly, leaving families trapped inside until rescue personnel reached them.
Commercial areas also suffered significant damage. Water entered numerous shops, warehouses, and shopping complexes, causing losses worth millions of rupees. Basement parking facilities in several commercial buildings were completely flooded, leaving hundreds of parked vehicles partially or fully submerged.
Business owners are expected to face a lengthy recovery process as they assess damage to stock, equipment, and infrastructure.
Around 2,100 Residents Shifted to Safer Locations
According to Surat Municipal Commissioner M. Nagarajan, the situation worsened after exceptionally heavy rainfall in Palsana and upstream regions led to a sharp increase in water flowing through local creeks and drainage channels.
As water levels continued rising, authorities initiated precautionary evacuations in vulnerable areas. Around 2,100 residents from flood-prone localities have been moved to safer shelters as a preventive measure.
Officials said the administration is continuously monitoring the situation and coordinating rescue efforts across affected areas. Additional relief measures are being implemented to assist families displaced by the flooding.
To strengthen emergency response capabilities, specialized teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in Surat. Their presence is expected to improve rescue operations should water levels rise further.
Tapi River Causeway Crosses Danger Mark
Authorities are also closely monitoring the Tapi River, which flows through Surat. The river’s causeway has crossed the officially designated danger level, raising concerns about further flooding in riverside communities.
The danger mark for the causeway is fixed at 6 metres, but the water level has risen to approximately 7.16 metres due to heavy inflows from upstream catchment areas.
Officials reported that nearly 67,126 cusecs of water is currently flowing over the causeway, resulting in overflow conditions. Residents living along low-lying stretches of the river have been advised to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions if required.
Disaster management teams are keeping a close watch on river conditions as additional rainfall could increase discharge levels further.
Police Rescue Residents Trapped in Floodwaters
Among several rescue operations carried out across the city, police personnel played an important role in evacuating stranded residents.
In Surat’s Azad Nagar area, where more than 10 inches of rain led to waist-deep water accumulation, several families found themselves trapped inside flooded homes.
A team from the Khatodara Police Station reached the locality and helped residents move to safer locations. During one rescue, a Police Sub-Inspector was seen carrying a woman on his back through floodwaters, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by emergency responders.
Multiple rescue operations continued throughout the day as authorities responded to distress calls from different parts of the city.
Schools and Colleges Closed as Heavy Rain Forecast Continues
With the weather department forecasting another spell of heavy rainfall, the Surat district administration has announced the closure of all schools and colleges on Wednesday.
The precautionary holiday aims to minimize travel risks for students and staff while allowing emergency services to continue rescue and relief work without additional traffic on city roads.
Parents have also been advised to avoid unnecessary movement and closely follow official weather updates.
Public Transport Services Severely Affected
Persistent flooding has significantly disrupted public transportation across Surat.
Several roads remain waterlogged, forcing the suspension or diversion of BRTS and city bus services. Officials said buses would resume operations gradually once water levels recede and road conditions become safe.
Transport authorities continue to monitor major routes, with services expected to restart in phases depending on local conditions.
Commuters have been urged to check official updates before planning travel.
Five Weather Systems Trigger Intense Rain Across Gujarat
Meteorologists attribute the exceptionally heavy rainfall to the simultaneous influence of five active weather systems affecting Gujarat.
The combined impact has resulted in widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across South Gujarat and parts of the Saurashtra region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for five districts due to the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. Three additional districts remain under warnings for heavy to very heavy rain.
Apart from Surat, weather authorities have warned of intense rainfall accompanied by strong winds in Navsari, Valsad, Bhavnagar, Dahod, Panchmahal, Mahisagar, Mehsana, Surendranagar, Ahmedabad, along with the Union Territories of Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
Residents in these regions have been advised to remain indoors during periods of intense rainfall and avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges.

- South Gujarat: Well above average in many locations
- Kutch: Lowest rainfall at 1.92%
Meteorologists expect rainfall activity to continue over the coming days as active monsoon conditions persist.
Reservoir Levels Continue to Improve
The ongoing rainfall has significantly boosted water storage across Gujarat.
The Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) Dam currently holds around 2.17 lakh MCFT of water, representing roughly 65% of its storage capacity.
Across the state, 206 reservoirs have reached an average storage level of approximately 40.01%.
However, rising water levels have prompted authorities to place:
- 11 dams on High Alert
- 4 dams on Alert
Officials are monitoring reservoir inflows closely to ensure safe water management while maintaining flood preparedness downstream.

Government figures show that:
- 1,528 people have been safely evacuated.
- 134 individuals have been rescued from emergency situations.
- 36 teams from the NDRF and SDRF have been deployed across multiple districts to respond to flood-related emergencies.
Authorities continue to coordinate with local administrations, municipal bodies, police, and emergency responders to ensure rapid assistance wherever required.
Citizens Urged to Remain Vigilant
Officials have appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly through waterlogged roads and flood-prone areas. People living near rivers, creeks, and low-lying neighborhoods have been advised to stay alert for official evacuation notices.
Emergency services remain operational around the clock as Gujarat continues to experience one of the most active phases of the 2026 southwest monsoon. With forecasts indicating that heavy rainfall may persist over the next several days, authorities are focusing on rescue operations, public safety, and minimizing disruption to essential services while closely monitoring river levels and weather developments across the state.
