Jamnagar Bank Strike: Banking services came to a standstill across Jamnagar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts as more than 2,000 employees and officers of nationalised banks joined a mass strike demanding the implementation of a five-day working week. The protest affected several major public sector banks, including State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), Bank of Baroda (BOB) and Central Bank of India.

The strike has disrupted regular banking operations in both districts, with cheque clearing and other financial transactions worth more than ₹2,000 crore reportedly held up. The situation has caused concern among traders, businesses and ordinary customers who depend on banks for daily financial activities.

Bank Employees Stage Strong Protest in Jamnagar

As part of the Jamnagar Bank Strike, a large number of bank employees and officers gathered outside the Central Bank of India branch in the Ranjitnagar area of Jamnagar. The protest was organised under the leadership of bank unions.

Employees carried placards and raised slogans in support of their long-pending demands. They called for immediate action from the government and the concerned authorities, expressing dissatisfaction over the delay in resolving issues related to working days and other service matters.

The demonstration drew significant participation from bank staff, creating a strong atmosphere of protest outside the branch.

More Than 2,000 Employees Join the Strike

The strike was held following a call from the United Forum of Bank Unions. More than 2,000 bank employees and officers from Jamnagar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts stayed away from work.

Employees of several government-owned banks participated in the strike, resulting in a situation similar to a complete shutdown at many branches. With staff members absent, a number of routine banking services were affected.

Cash deposits and withdrawals, administrative work, draft-related services and the processing of new loan approvals were among the activities disrupted by the strike. Customers who visited branches for these services had to face inconvenience.

₹2,000 Crore in Cheque Clearing Affected

One of the biggest concerns arising from the Jamnagar Bank Strike is the disruption to cheque clearing. More than ₹2,000 crore worth of cheques across Jamnagar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts are estimated to have been affected by the banking shutdown.

The disruption has particularly worried local businesses and industries that depend on timely financial settlements. The brass parts industry, oil milling businesses and local traders are among those facing difficulties as large-value transactions remain pending.

For businesses, delays in cheque clearance can affect payments, working capital and regular financial commitments. The strike has therefore created uncertainty among sections of the local business community.

Customers Also Face Banking Difficulties

The impact has not been limited to traders and industrial units. Ordinary bank customers also faced problems because branch operations were disrupted.

People who needed to withdraw or deposit cash had limited access to branch-based services. Customers requiring administrative assistance or other banking services were also affected by the strike.

While digital banking channels may continue to provide some services, customers who depend on physical branches for specific transactions and banking requirements have been left facing inconvenience.

Unions Warn of Bigger Agitation

Bank employee leaders have warned that the current protest could intensify if their demands are not addressed.

According to the employee representatives, the key demands include the introduction of a five-day working week and pension updation, along with the resolution of other pending issues concerning bank employees.

The unions have made it clear that they expect a positive response from the Central Government and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). They have warned that if their demands continue to remain unresolved, further protests could be organised in the coming days.

The Jamnagar Bank Strike has consequently brought banking activity across the two districts to a halt and highlighted the growing pressure from bank employees for action on their long-standing demands. With more than ₹2,000 crore in cheque clearing reportedly affected, traders, industries and customers are closely watching what steps the authorities and bank management take next.
